Edna Jean Garner- teacher, reverend, neighbour and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday 30th April. Edna knew and cared for people from all walks of life. Her strength, humour, warmth and wisdom brought people together and changed lives, she spoke with her hands and her heart. She is much loved and will be remembered by all who knew her.

Edna Garner was notable for her pioneering work in New Zealand deaf education, promoting “total communication”, both as a Teacher of the Deaf at the Kelston Deaf Education Centre, and through her ministry work in the Auckland Methodist Mission and Hamilton Deaf Christian Fellowship. Rev Garner authored Indelible Imprints, An Introduction To The World Of Deaf Ministry. Edna became a teacher in 1951, teaching at Island Bay School in Wellington, and Westmere School in Auckland, New Zealand. Edna was active in Methodist Church congregations at the Trinity Methodist Church and the Island Bay Methodist Church in Wellington, New Zealand, the Chester Hill Methodist Church, Mount Vernon, New York (now First United Methodist Church), Bedford United Church in Nova Scotia, Canada, St. Austell’s Church in New Lynn, Auckland, New Zealand.
